Are you Over-Fruiting?

I don’t know about you, but as soon as the days start to get longer and warmer, I crave more and more fruit. All the colorful, hydrating, sweet fruits that are plentiful in the supermarket are such a refreshing sight after months of hearty soups and stews. But while fruits are bundled with fiber and nutrients our bodies need, we have to remember that they are absorbed into our body as sugar. The fructose in fruit is still sugar and if we overdo it, sugar turns to fat.

Here are a few tips I like to remember when it comes to fruit:

  1. I don’t like to say any fruit is off limits, but if you are trying to lose weight you should choose fruits that have a lower glycemic index like strawberries, rasberries, watermelon, and papaya rather than bananas and grapes.
  2. Two. Limit yourself to two servings of fruit per day. This could be a cup of berries with your oatmeal or yogurt at breakfast, and an apple with peanut butter as a snack. And that’s it. That’s enough fruit for the average person.
  3. Pair your fruit with fat or protein. This is going to help your body absorb the sugar in the fruit more slowly. Try pairing your fruit with nuts or nut butter, or a hardboiled egg for example.

Enjoy the rainbow of produce that is becoming more readily available, just make sure as with most things in life, moderation is key. Be careful not to over-fruit. Craving more fruit could also be a sign of dehydration. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Slice some lemon rings into your water for added refreshment.
